How to choose your Linux daily driver and stop distro hopping
Use the Last Distro Standing Challenge to test multiple distros with Ventoy and eliminate until one remains.
Choosing a Linux distro feels impossible when you’re drowning in options. In this video from Learn Linux TV, you’ll learn how the “Last Distro Standing Challenge” helps you decide through structured elimination instead of endless second-guessing.
Jay introduces a challenge that puts multiple Linux distros through an elimination process until only one remains. Instead of constantly downloading ISOs, recreating bootable media, testing one distro, wiping the flash drive, and starting over, he shows a more efficient approach using Ventoy, a multiboot solution that stores multiple ISO images on a single flash drive.
Setting up Ventoy on Windows is straightforward. Download the utility from ventoy.net, extract it, run the installer, select your flash drive (it will be wiped), and click install. Once set up, you should never need Windows again. Simply copy ISO files into the Ventoy folder on the flash drive. Boot from the drive, access your boot menu (usually F7, F11, or F12), and select which distro to test.

The challenge follows one simple rule: compare two distros in live mode, then delete the one you like least. No exceptions. Test thoroughly in live mode by checking Wi-Fi connectivity, speakers, microphone, webcam, Bluetooth devices, printers, external monitors, and game controllers. Launch applications you regularly use and test your actual workflow.
Live mode performance might not be perfect since the entire operating system loads from a USB flash drive, but it provides a close approximation of real-world behavior without permanent system changes. After testing two distros, delete the ISO of the one you liked least from the Ventoy folder. Repeat the process, comparing survivors until only one distro remains standing.
Key takeaways
- Ventoy eliminates constant media recreation – Store multiple ISO images on one flash drive and switch between distros by rebooting and selecting a different option from the boot menu.
- Test hardware thoroughly in live mode – Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, external monitors, and your actual workflow before deciding, since hardware support varies significantly between distributions.
- One stays, one goes – The challenge’s core rule forces real decisions by requiring you to delete the losing distro after each comparison, preventing endless paralysis.
Jay’s structured approach transforms overwhelming choice into manageable decisions. The “Last Distro Standing Challenge” helps you finally commit to a daily driver instead of perpetually distro hopping.
