Democratizing AI: Building responsible and ethical solutions as a developer

Five principles for developers to utilize AI that empowers their work, not replaces them.

Dhivya Nagasubramanian, data and AI leader, sat down with the All Things Open team to share her journey into AI, why democratizing the technology matters, and how developers can build responsibly.

Dhivya’s career began with a love of data, but her perspective shifted when she realized data’s true value comes from driving business outcomes. That insight inspired her to step away from a full-time job, earn a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, and accelerate her path into AI and machine learning.

For developers exploring AI careers, Dhivya encourages treating data as more than numbers and look for how it can create impact. She highlights the openness of today’s AI community and recommends attending developer conferences to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge.

Democratizing AI is at the heart of Dhivya’s work. She defines it with these five attributes: Accessibility, affordability, education, ethical AI, and community contribution. She’s even building a Duolingo-style app to introduce AI concepts to students, showing that early education and open source tools are key to making AI accessible to everyone.

Key takeaways

  • Adopt a business mindset: Shift from viewing data as something static to using it for meaningful business impact.
  • Build and scale responsibly: Involve end users early, focus on ethical AI, and question outputs for fairness and accuracy.
  • AI as assistant, not replacement: Developers remain essential and AI should augment workflows rather than compete with human intelligence.

Conclusion

Dhivya’s story shows how curiosity, education, and community can make AI more inclusive. By focusing on responsible practices and open source collaboration, developers can create AI solutions that help people, not replace them.
