How I used genAI to find live music

GenAI meets the live music scene: A concert hack for ATO attendees.

This article is part of the eBook: Everyday AI guide: Practical genAI life hacks from real users, a free download from We Love Open Source.

I enjoy live music and don’t want to miss when my favorite band comes to town. I decided to see how generative AI could help me discover any live music happening during the All Things Open conference. For this experiment, I used Gemini on my Chromebook Plus and a list of Raleigh music venues.

How to find live music with genAI

First, I compiled a list of local venues with their websites that I was familiar with and often visited for live music, then I shared it with Gemini. I then took an additional step, which surprised me.

Venues I started with:

  • Bowstring Brewyard: https://bowstringbrewyard.com/
  • Kings: https://www.kingsraleigh.com/
  • Neptunes: https://www.neptunesraleigh.com/
  • Red Hat Amphitheater: https://www.redhatamphitheater.com/
  • The Lincoln Theatre: https://lincolntheatre.com/
  • The Pour House Music Hall: https://thepourhousemusichall.com/
  • The Ritz: https://www.ritzraleigh.com/
  • Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek: https://www.coastalcreditunionmusicpark.com/

I was able to just copy and paste this list into the prompt. Next, I asked Gemini to do a search to see if there were any additional music venues worth adding.

Can you do a quick search to see if there are any
additional music venues worth adding to the list?

And Gemini found legit venues that were not on my original list, including places like City Plaza, Slim’s Downtown, and The Brewery. Bonus: now I have new places to go check out!

Here is where I was surprised. Part of the results included Koka Booth Amphitheatre, which is geographically in the town of Cary, outside of my initial search parameters. But Koka Booth is a sizable music venue where major bands headlined during the summer, and I certainly don’t want an ATO attendee to miss a great act nearby. I could have easily told Gemini to remove the venue from my results, but I decided to keep it on the list.

Putting genAI to the test

Now, this is the fun part and the real test of whether genAI would work. I first shared my goal, followed by instructions with date parameters, and some formatting. I also decided to see how Gemini would handle my request to sort by distance from the Raleigh Convention Center. Here is my prompt:

Goal: Find live music at the venues in our list,
during the All Things Open event in Raleigh, NC
Can you perform the following tasks:
1) Search the venues and look for shows between October 10-15
2) List any results by date, then venue, then sort by distance
from the Raleigh Convention Center.

I was impressed by the results. I won’t share the entire blurb because I found it wordy and hard to read, but you can see these example results.

Getting the format you want

Now, let’s clean up the results in a format that’s easier to read. I simply told Gemini whatever format I wanted the revised information in and shared some additional instructions. For example, here is the prompt I used:

Wow, this is amazing. Can we make this easier to read?
How about a chart organized in the same fashion,
let's reduce the amount of repeated words.

And here are the final results.

Wow, thanks! Here’s that information in a chart format to make it easier to read.

Conclusion

My quick experiment with Gemini proved that using generative AI for concert research is not only possible but also surprisingly effective. I did a quick spot-check on a few of the venue websites to verify the results and found them to be accurate. At the time of my research, I was suspicious about Bowstring, as they typically have a packed concert calendar. It turns out my hunch was correct; there were no listings for October on their calendar yet. This is a perfect example of why it’s always smart to double-check AI-generated information.

Now it’s your turn. Borrow my list of music venues and my research prompts and see what results you get. The possibilities are endless when you apply this same process, and you can make the results even better. For example, you could ask Gemini to add a reputable link for tickets, include a column for ticket prices, or eliminate shows more than a mile away. It’s a powerful new tool, and with a few well-crafted prompts, you can make it work for you. Time to get your next show on the road-map!
