Getting started with Ubuntu 26.04: Your Linux installation guide
What you need to know about requirements, testing, and installing Ubuntu successfully.
I’ve been using Ubuntu for twenty years, and it remains one of my favorite Linux distributions. Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute Raccoon) is the latest long-term release, and after hearing about its new features on a Linux podcast, I decided to install it on a spare computer.
Downloading and installing a new distribution in a virtual machine or on an extra computer has become second nature to me. But what about those who are new to Linux? This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started with Ubuntu 26.04.
Ubuntu 26.04 system requirements
Before you begin, make sure your computer meets these requirements:
- RAM: 6 GB minimum
- Hard disk space: 25 GB minimum
- Processor: 2 GHz dual-core processor
- USB port: At least one (for installation from a live USB drive)
If your computer meets these specifications, you’re ready to proceed.
Downloading Ubuntu and creating installation media
First, you’ll need to download the appropriate .iso file. Visit the Ubuntu website and find the link for Intel or AMD 64-bit architecture. Download it to your computer.
Creating a bootable USB drive. If you’re a Microsoft Windows user, you’ll need software to create a live USB drive. I recommend Balena Etcher, which makes the process straightforward. Once you’ve created the installation media, you’re ready to begin.

Testing Ubuntu with a live USB before installing
Before installing Ubuntu permanently, you should test it to ensure your hardware is compatible.
Boot from the USB drive. Depending on your computer’s manufacturer, you’ll need to use a specific keystroke to boot from USB. Dell computers use F12 during startup. Other manufacturers use F2, Esc, or Del. Check your computer’s documentation if you’re unsure.
Select “Try Ubuntu without installing.” This option lets you test Ubuntu without making any changes to your hard drive.
Test your hardware. Once Ubuntu loads, check the following:
- Can you connect to Wi-Fi?
- Does Firefox open and work properly?
- Does YouTube play with good sound?
- Do your keyboard and trackpad work correctly?
- If you have an extra USB port, test whether an external mouse works (wired or wireless)
If everything works, you’re ready to install.
Installing Ubuntu 26.04 step by step
To begin the installation, double-click the “Install Ubuntu” icon on your desktop.
Choose your installation type. You can install Ubuntu alongside an existing operating system (like Microsoft Windows) or completely erase the old partition and start fresh. Choose the option that fits your needs.
Complete the installation prompts. During installation, you’ll be asked to:
- Name your computer
- Select default settings
- Create a username and password
- Optionally encrypt your hard disk (I don’t recommend encryption for beginners, as it can lead to data loss if not managed carefully)
Install multimedia codecs. You may be prompted to install multimedia codecs to ensure proper software functionality. Accept this option.
Restart your computer. When installation completes, you’ll be prompted to restart. Remove the USB drive when instructed.

Essential software and post-installation setup
After your first restart, you’ll likely be prompted to update your software. Accept these updates to ensure you have the latest security patches.
What’s included out of the box. Ubuntu 26.04 includes Firefox as the default browser and a file browser for managing documents and files in your home directory.
Installing additional software. Ubuntu’s App Center makes it easy to find and install open source software. There are hundreds of high-quality programs available. Every modern browser except Apple’s Safari can be installed on Linux.
Software I installed. Ubuntu 26.04 doesn’t come with LibreOffice pre-installed, but I installed it as a snap package through the App Center with just a few clicks. I also installed Brave Browser, Microsoft Visual Studio Code, and Spotify (which, though proprietary, is available directly from the App Center).
Next steps: Keep learning
Once you’ve successfully installed Ubuntu 26.04, keep your system updated regularly. Updates provide the latest features, security patches, and improve your overall experience.
As you become more comfortable, consider exploring the command line interface. While it may seem intimidating at first, the command line is a powerful tool that can improve your efficiency. Many system operations and software installations can be performed more quickly through terminal commands than through graphical interfaces.
Resources like online forums, tutorials, and documentation will be invaluable as you learn. With practice, you’ll discover that Ubuntu offers both power and flexibility for everyday computing.
