A friend of mine has several tattoos on their legs and arms, and one of them reads “Faith without works is dead,” from the Bible Book of James. The tattoo is in Aramaic, and the uninitiated person would not know what it meant without translation. The quote holds meaning for both of us, stemming from a shared interest.
I’m an Instagram user, and so is my friend. On my morning walk a day or two later, I took a photo of some lovely flowers and then using ChatGPT, created an Instagram story that had the text superimposed on the picture of the flowers. I used the following prompt to generate the text in Aramaic so that I could copy and paste it onto the image:
Translate "faith without works is dead" into Aramaic.
ChatGPT rendered the following answer:
The phrase “Faith without works is dead” is a well-known biblical quote from James 2:26 in the New Testament.
In Classical Syriac Aramaic, a dialect of Aramaic used in many early Christian texts, the translation is:
ܗܝܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܠܐ ܒܥܒܕܐ ܡܝܬܐ ܗܝ
(Haymanutha d’la b’ʿabda mayta hi)This breaks down as:
- ܗܝܡܢܘܬܐ (haymanutha) – faith
- ܕܠܐ (d’la) – without
- ܒܥܒܕܐ (bʿabda) – works
- ܡܝܬܐ (mayta) – dead
- ܗܝ (hi) – is (she is)
So, literally: “Faith without works is dead (she is).”

My friend asked me how I was able to do that, and I shared how easy it is to accomplish tasks like this using generative AI.
Just like with any AI task, it helps to know what you’re aiming for. I already had the starting point and the picture in my head of what I wanted at the end. ChatGPT just filled in the middle, like a helpful assistant who never gets tired. Now it’s your turn to give it a try.
