Nithya Ruff – Open Source ICON 2025

Nithya Ruff was the recipient of All Things Open’s Open Source ICON Award for 2025.

The award was given to Nithya on the main stage at the conference back in October, and it could not have gone to a more deserving person.

Nithya has spent her carer in the open source space and her contributions continue to have a seismic impact.

She currently serves as the Head of the Amazon Open Source Program Office where she drives open source culture and coordination inside of Amazon and engagement with external communities. Prior to Amazon, she started and grew Comcast and Western Digital’s Open Source Program Offices. Open Source Program Offices are a critical part of a company’s digital transformation and innovation journey and enable the intentional and systematic engagement with open source for companies.

She’s also been director-at-large on the Linux Foundation Board for the last 5 years and in 2019 was elected to be Chair of the Board. She’s also a passionate advocate and speaker for opening doors to new and diverse people in technology and can often be seen speaking and writing on this topic.

The world knows Nithhya for the reasons listed above. But we love, appreciate, and recognize her for other reasons that are not so public. 

She was instrumental in helping us start the Inclusion & Diversity event that has taken place at All Things Open since 2018. She’s helped identify speakers, she’s emcee’d the event multiple times, and she’s attended and been a force onsite every year from the beginning.

Nithya is also a multi-year speaker at the Monday/Tuesday conference, including at the keynote level, delivering a huge amount of value and insight in the process. She’s helped us secure many, many speakers behind the scenes as well, leveraging her tremendous influence on our behalf in the process. She also continues to provide guidance to key questions we have about a variety of topics, which has been so incredibly helpful.

This is all wonderful of course, but what truly makes her an ICON is the grace and humility with which she does it. Nithya continues to be one of the kindest, smartest, and down-to-earth generous people we have ever come across. She’s simply a lovely human being.

In a world that is often rough and with very hard edges, we’re thankful Nithya Ruff is in the game and making a difference. The world needs more people like her.
