Building Diverse Blockchain Communities for a Decentralized Future (15 minute talk)

Jocelyn Matthews

Decentralization and blockchain technologies apply the principles of open, transparent collaboration to our burgeoning world of opportunity. Because of this, you would expect blockchain technology to be on the forefront of equality, women empowerment, and inclusiveness. If you thought that, you would be wrong, as women are only about half as likely to find themselves in a leadership role at a blockchain company compared to a traditional tech company. If we expect blockchain technologies to take hold and truly be successful, we must compel the next generation of underrepresented groups to get involved in these communities and help build the technologies of tomorrow. Women are a key component of this push. Additionally, we need to be intersectional in our approach for inclusion and diversity. Race, ethnicity and other significant factors cannot be overlooked. This presentation will discuss the confluence of blockchain and open source and how its principles of transparency, and openness will contribute to societal shifts for women, nonbinary people and other underrepresented groups in coming years.
