How mentorship helped me overcome anxiety and thrive in my technology career

From the Grateful Dead to tech: A story of reinvention and adaptability

Brittany Istenes navigated a journey marked by resilience, personal growth, and embracing change. After attending 15 different schools by the time she graduated high school, she learned to quickly adapt to new environments. This adaptability paved the way for her unconventional career path, from following the Grateful Dead on tour to becoming a special education teacher, and later transitioning into the tech industry.

“The lack of stability drove me to learn how to adapt very quickly. You have to turn yourself into a chameleon in order to thrive in different environments.”

Her time in education showed her the power of patience and belief in others, but her shift into edtech was another pivotal moment. While navigating a toxic work culture at a larger company, Brittany struggled with anxiety but found strength through mentorship. With support from leaders like Nithya Ruff, she regained her confidence and found success in her new role at a major financial firm’s open source program office.

Brittany’s story highlights the importance of resilience, trusting your instincts, and embracing change—even in the face of obstacles. Her journey is a reminder that with self-compassion and the right guidance, we can adapt and thrive in any environment.
