What is a software build of materials?
Why every developer should care about SBOMs.
What is an SBOM?
An SBOM (Software Bill of Materials) lists all components and dependencies in a software application. With new U.S. executive orders requiring SBOMs, they are becoming essential for transparency and security. As the software industry moves toward more regulation, SBOMs are emerging as a standard practice to ensure better visibility and accountability in the software supply chain.

For those not familiar, what is an SBOM and why are they important?
An SBOM stands for Software Build of Materials and they’re becoming more important because the federal government of the United States put into executive order that they’re going to be required as we a move ahead into a more regulated time in the software industry. There are different ways that people are able to generate visibility into the software that they’re using down in their application stack, but that’s kind of quickly becoming a pattern or an industry norm.
