Open source and opportunity: How to grow your career with the right support
Nithya Ruff’s open source journey includes independence, advocacy, and paying it forward.
Nithya Ruff’s career in open source is a testament to independence, resilience, and the power of advocacy. Encouraged by her father to pursue computer science, she took a leap of faith and moved from India to the U.S., setting the foundation for a career that would lead her to leadership roles at Amazon and the Linux Foundation. But success didn’t come easily—it required persistence, self-advocacy, and a strong network of allies.
Building a support system and “Lighting the way” in tech
Throughout her journey, mentors and sponsors played a crucial role. Early in her career, she learned that support systems—both personal and professional—could make the difference between stagnation and growth. She credits her husband’s unwavering support for allowing her to fully immerse herself in her work, and mentors for guiding her through pivotal moments. These advocates helped her navigate the complexities of the tech industry, pushing her to take on leadership roles she hadn’t initially envisioned for herself.
One of Nithya’s biggest lessons is the importance of self-advocacy. She encourages others to ask for what they want—whether it’s a promotion, a new challenge, or a seat at the table. She stresses that no one is a mind reader, and opportunities often come to those who actively seek them. Equally important is the ability to persist despite obstacles, especially for women and underrepresented groups in tech.
Now, Nithya is focused on paying it forward. She mentors others, opens doors for the next generation, and advocates for diversity in open source. Her advice to others? Believe in yourself, build a strong support system, and never underestimate the power of community. Skills matter, but the relationships you forge and the impact you create will define your success.
